Dividend Stocks Strategy — Hard Assets with Cashflow

The Number of the Week: $4 Billion

Devon Energy completed its merger with Coterra — and is simultaneously weighing the sale of two major fields for up to $4 billion. That is the energy cycle in its purest form: consolidate first, then tighten the portfolio and return the proceeds to shareholders.

Assessment, not fact: Transactions like these say more about the state of the sector than any forecast. If you can sell fields for billions, you are sitting on assets the market wants right now.

The Deal Wave in Energy

Devon/Coterra was not the only deal of the week: Suncor and South Bow also made headlines with transactions. The energy sector is consolidating — large players are pooling reserves, selling non-core positions and concentrating on their most profitable fields.

Macro: G7 Diesel Decision and the Oil Price Split

The G7 agreed on measures for the diesel market this week — a direct intervention on the product side of the oil market. At the same time, Brent and WTI drifted apart: the split between the two benchmarks shows how differently supply and demand are running regionally. The Strait of Hormuz remained blocked — no new escalation, but no relief either.

Eight Portfolio-Relevant Filings

Compact, because the week was packed: CMB.Tech, Thungela, Fortum, ZIM, Hapag-Lloyd, AT&T, OMV and Siemens — all with filings assessed individually in the video. Plus the Genco summer record in distributions, which sets a high bar for the coming quarters.

Disclosure: I hold several of the names mentioned in my publicly viewable portfolio (Trade Republic / Scalable Capital). Not investment advice.

The Thesis of the Week

Read transactions, not forecasts. When companies like Devon complete mergers and sell fields for billions at the same time, that is a documented fact about the cycle — not an opinion. For a cashflow portfolio, that is exactly what matters: what happens to the proceeds, and whether they reach shareholders via dividends or buybacks.
